In the past a collector would escort guests to the wine cellar to view their collection and choose a wine for dinner. The stay in the cellar was usually short because it was too cold to entertain in the storage area.  Today many wine cellar designs include a storage room typically viewed through glass panels from the tasting room*.

Some commercial cave builders offer residential-sized subterranean caves, although many parts of the country do not offer the yard space or zoning to accommodate such a project.
